Charlotte, N.C. — The more than 90 years old building on West 10th Street in the Fourth Ward is falling apart. A sign on the front door declares the building “unsafe.” The owner, former Charlotte City Council member Malachi Greene said it is no longer reasonable to maintain the building. Not to mention he owes $2,600 in property taxes on the site.
So Green is looking for a buyer hoping that person will preserve it.
“I think they can do something with that,” one woman passing by the site said. “If I could afford it … (there’s) potential in that house.”
But the City of Charlotte, Historic Landmarks Commission decided there was no reason to give Green extended time and approved its demolition. The Commission offered to buy the site a few years ago, but Greene couldn’t agree on a price. Now the city plans to knock it down and send Greene the bill.
Many community members approved.
“It’s not a good look for the community, you know. Not at all,” Plummer Brown said. “It’s always break-ins and, you know, the bums and stuff live in there. It’s just not good.”
Demolition is expected to start after the holidays.
